칸느영화제 황금종려상 수상작이기도 한 프랑스 뮤지컬 영화 『쉘부르의 우산』(The Umbrellas Of Cherbourg, Les Parapluies De Cherbourg, 1964) 의 주제곡으로 영어로 “I Will Wait for You” 프랑스어로는 “Je ne pourrai jamais vivre sans toi”라 한다.
『쉘부르의 우산』은 등장인물의 대사가 모두 노래로 처리되어 있어 다른 뮤지컬영화들과 확연히 구분된다. 이 영화에는 그래서 ‘필름 오페라’라는 수식어가 붙기도 한다.
영화 감독은 자크 데미(Jacques Demy)가 까뜨린느 드뇌브, 니노 카스텔누오보가 주연을 맡았다.
개인적으로는 옛날 국어 교과서에 나왔던 피천득 『인연』에서 먼저 알았는지 영화음악을 통해서 먼저 알았는지는 몰라도, 감수성 예민하던 때(?) 이 영화를 보고 그냥 감동받아 버렸다.
미셀 르그랑(Michel Legrand)이 음악을 담당했고 영화에서는 까뜨린느 드뇌브(Catherine Deneuve)가 노래를 부른다. 하지만 실제로는 다니엘 리까리(Danielle Licari)라는 가수의 목소리였다. 가사는 자크 데미(Jacques Demy)가 영어 가사는 노먼 김벌(Norman Gimbel)이 하였다.
1965년 38회 아카데미 주제가상 후보로 올랐었다.
