셰익스피어(Shakespeare) 원작의 1968년 영화 『로미오와 줄리엣(Romeo and Juliet, 1968)』에 나오는 정말 유명한 영화음악이다. 영화 OST에서는 ‘What Is A Youth’라는 제목으로 발표되었다.

이탈리아 작곡가 니노 로타는 영화 《길 La Strada》의 주제가 ‘젤소미나의 테마’로 세계적인 명성을 얻었다. 《로미오와 줄리엣 Romeo And Juliet》, 《대부 Godfather》로 영화음악에 독보적인 존재가 되었다. 《대부 2》로 아카데미 영화음악상을 수상했다.

영화음악의 거장 헨리 멘시니(Henry Mancini)는 니노 로타의 이 아름다운 멜로디에 감동을 얻은 나머지 스스로 편곡하여 싱글 레코드를 냈다. 그리고 이 싱글은 1969년 5월 10일에 빌보드 핫 100 싱글차트에 올라 6월 28일부터 연속 2주간 1위를 마크했다. 또 어덜트 컨템퍼러리 싱글 차트에서도 1위를 누비는 대 히트를 날렸다. 이 싱글은 곧 밀리언 셀러가 되었고, 1969년 6월 25일에는 RIAA로부터 골드 레코드를 획득했다.

헨리 멘시니의 싱글이 히트한 2달 뒤, 그 수려한 연주에 심취한 조니 마티스(Johnny Mathis)는 래리 쿠식(Larry Kusik)과 에디 스나이더(Eddy Snyder)가 번안한 ‘A Time For Us’란 부제로 싱글을 낸 것이 또 다시 히트했고 앤디 윌리엄스(Andy Williams) 등 많은 가수들이 이를 불렀다.

‘Ai Giochi Addio’라는 부제로도 루치아노 파바로티 (Luciano Pavarotti), 마시(Natasha Marsh) 등 많은 예술가들이 불렀다.
