1892년 체코 출신의 드보르자크(Dvorak)는 뉴욕의 내셔널 음악원 원장으로 임명되어 미국으로 건너 갔다. 그의 신세계 교향곡(Symphony No.9 ‘from the New World’)은 1893년 1월에 착수되어 5월에 완성되었고, 같은 해 12월 15일에 카네기 홀에서 공연되었다. 초연은 작곡가의 생애 최고라 할 수 있을 만큼 대성공이었다.

2악장 라르고(Largo)는 짧은 서주에 이어 잉글리시 호른이 유명한 주제를 노래한다. 이 주제는 ‘Going Home’이나 다른 이름으로 독립하여 연주되는데, 이 곡이 세계적으로 애호되는 이유 중의 하나이다. 초연 당시에는 고향에 대한 그리움을 노래한 이 선율을 듣고 많은 여성이 눈물을 흘렸다고 전해진다.
‘Going home(꿈속의 고향)’은 드보르자크의 제자인 윌리엄 암스 피셔(William Arms Fisher)가 2악장의 선율에 가사를 붙여 편곡했다. ‘꿈 속에 그려라~ 그리운 고향~’ 이라는 가사로 옛날 음악 교과서에도 있었다.
