<나일강의 진주>라 불리는 아름다운 필레 신전은 <이시스 신전>이 봉헌된 곳이다. 주요 건축물 중 가장 오래된 것은 <이시스 신전>으로 이집트 제30왕조의 넥타네보 1세(Nectanebo I, 기원전 380 ~ 362년) 통치 기간에 지어진 것으로 추정된다. 이는 근처에 있는 오시리스의 성지인 비게(Bigeh) 섬과 짝을 이루게 하기 위함이었다. (오시리스의 유해가 필레 섬에 묻혔다는 전설도 있다)
대부분의 다른 유적은 프톨레마이오스 왕조(Ptolemaic Kingdom)에서 유래되었다. 또한 이곳에는 로마제국 시절에도 많은 건축물이 들어섰다. 지금도 그 잔영을 볼 수 있는데 바로 아우구스투스 신전과 트라야누스 황제의 키오스크(트라잔의 정자, Trajan’s Kiosk)가 그것이다. 이곳은 바로 이집트 신전 중에서 마지막까지 명맥을 유지한 신전으로 유명하다. 이집트 상형문자가 마지막으로 기록된 곳도 이곳이다.
이 신전의 명맥이 끊어진 것은 로마제국의 기독교화에 있었다. 6세기에 동로마 황제 유스티니아누스는 이 신전을 폐쇄한다. 그 후 성소의 문은 파괴됐고, 신관들은 고문당했으며 신상 봉안소는 세속의 손길로 더럽혀졌다. 그리고 원기둥이 있는 홀은 교회가 됐다고 한다. 이 신전도 아스완 하이댐의 완공으로 사라질 위험에 처해 있었다. 이로 인해 국제사회가 동요했고, 마침내 사람들은 이 신전을 옮기기로 결정했다. 원래의 신전은 낱낱이 해체돼 필레(Philae) 섬을 떠나 인근의 작은 섬 아길키아(Agilika)로 옮겨졌다. 1980년 3월 10일이었다. 신전이 다시 태어난 날이다.

날개 달린 원반 – 태양을 상징(?)
호루스와 세트의 싸움에서, 호루스는 빛을 뿜는 커다란 날개 달린 원반으로 변해 싸웠다는 내용이 있다.

원주 14개를 갖춘 하나의 주랑 현관으로 구성된, 균형감각이 매우 뛰어난 건축물이다. 아마 고대에 나무로 지붕을 얹었을 것이다.

<이집트의 진주>, <마법의 섬> 필레는 여마법사 이시스의 영지이다. 아스완에 첫 번째 댐이 세워지기 전, 여행객들은 이 유적지의 매혹적인 아름다움에 찬사를 아끼지 않았다. 댐은 이 섬의 불행이었다. 일년에 몇 달씩이나 물에 잠기게 했다. 12월부터 6월까지, 기념물들의 꼭대기만이 물 밖으로 나와 있었으며, 그래서 사람들은 조만간 훼손될 것을 염려했다. 피에르 로티는 『필레의 죽음』을 쓰면서 그 치명적인 결말을 탄식했다. 나룻배들이 기둥머리들 사이로 오가리라는 그의 예견은 분명 낭만적이지만 불가피한 파손에 대한 사실적인 확인이기도 하다.
1960년에는 첫 번째 댐보다 훨씬 큰 새 댐의 건설이라는 새로운 위험이 이 불행한 필레 섬을 위협한다. 이제 신전은 결정적으로 사라질 운명에 처한 것이다.
국제 사회가 동요했고, 그리하여 사람들은 이 신전을 옮기기로 결정했다. 해체 작업은 1974년에 시작되었다. 낱낱이 해체된 건축물들은 필레 섬을 떠나, 일년 내내 물에 잠기지 않는, 근처의 작은 섬 아길키아로 옮겨졌다. 24개국이 협력했고 4만 5천 개의 벽돌들이 옮겨졌으며 원래의 섬과 같은 모습으로 다듬어졌다. 준공식은 1980년 3월 10일에 거행되었다. 신전이 다시 태어난 날이었다.
예나 지금이나 이시스의 성지로 가려면 나룻배를 타야 한다. 필레 섬에 이시스를 위한 대신전 건설을 시작한 이는 넥타네보 1세(제30왕조)로서, 이는 근처에 있는 오시리스의 성지인 비게 섬과 짝을 이루게 하기 위함이었다.
어떤 인간도 오시리스의 몸에서 나와 홍수를 만드는 그 체액의 발원지인 비게의 땅을 밟아서는 안 되었다. 오시리스 신의 무덤 주위에는 일년 365일을 위한 365개의 제실이 있었다. 매 열흘마다 이시스가 필레에서 이곳으로 와 우유를 헌주했다.
기원후 437년에 이집트 최후의 문자 기록이 새겨진 곳이 바로 이곳, 임호테프가 추모되고 있는 필레다. 바로 이 섬에서 마지막 사제들은 기독교가 이 나라에 전파된 뒤에도 오랫동안 조상 전래의 의례를 거행했다. 여전히 순례자들이 위대한 여신에게 예배를 올리기 위해 누비아로부터 이곳으로 왔다.
그러다 암울한 해인 550년에 유스티니아누스 황제가 이 이집트 최후의 신전을 폐쇄했다. 성소의 문은 파괴되었고, 사제들은 고문당했으며, 신상 봉안소는 세속의 손길에 더렵혀졌다. 그리고 원기둥들이 있는 홀은 교회가 되었다.

문자 기록들이 가리키고 있듯이, 이시스는 생명의 원천이요, 죽음을 이길 수 있는 마법사이며, 천신(天神)들에게 별자리를 정해주는 여(女)군주이다. 하늘에서나 땅에서나 그의 동의 없이는 아무런 일도 일어나지 않으며, 모든 것에 그의 봉인이 표시되어 있다.

‘이집트의 진주’라고 불리는 이시스(Isis) 여신의 신전은 아스완(Assuan)의 나일 강이 첫 폭포를 이루는 곳에서 가까운 필라에(Philae) 섬에 있다. 이 신전은 피라미드와는 거의 관계가 없는 곳이다. 가장 오래된 피라미드와 이 신전 사이에 놓인 세월의 간극만 해도 2천 년이 넘는다. 그럼에도 불구하고 신전은 피라미드와 상형문자(hieroglyph)의 나라 이집트에서 역사적으로 독특한 경계석의 역활을 하고 있다.
문화적 · 정치적 중심지와 멀리 떨어져 이집트의 최남단에 위치한 이 신전은 4세기 말에서 5세기 초에 걸친 세기의 전환기에 이교도들이 구축한 최후의 요새 중의 하나다. 당시만 해도 이곳에서 이집트 본래의 각종 우상 숭배가 활발하게 이루어진 것은 그런 이유에서다. 그리고 이런 숭배의 전통을 저 야성의 누비아(Nubia) 족은 자신의 것으로 받아들인다. 이제까지 발견된 상형문자들 중에서 가장 나중의 것이라고 할 수 있는 신관문자가 이시스 신전에 새겨진 것은 394년8월24일이다.
